About This Journey

Where Maharajas Once Slept — You Shall Reside

Three of the most celebrated hotels in all of Asia were, until very recently, the private homes of Rajasthan's ruling families. Rambagh Palace in Jaipur was the residence of the last Maharaja of Jaipur — a man who played polo on the front lawn. Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, completed in 1943, is the largest private residence still inhabited by a royal family in the world — the current Maharaja lives in one wing while guests occupy the other. Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur — a 250-year-old white marble palace that appears to float on Lake Pichola — was a royal summer retreat so secluded it could only be reached by boat.

These are not hotels that were designed to look like palaces. They are palaces that were converted into hotels — with every painting, every carved archway, every handwoven carpet original and authenticated. The level of craftsmanship, history, and hospitality inside these walls is found nowhere else on earth.

Sanoli India Tours has been arranging luxury Rajasthan journeys for over 35 years. We coordinate directly with the palace hotels and arrange exclusive experiences — private fort tours before public opening, courtyard dinners under the Rajasthan stars, royal cooking demonstrations, and personalised moments that are not available to walk-in guests. Every detail of your journey is managed by a single point of contact from arrival to departure.

Jaipur Rambagh Palace

The former royal residence of HH Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II of Jaipur. Built in 1835 as a garden house for the queen's handmaiden, it was expanded into a royal palace over three centuries. The last Maharaja played polo on the front lawn. Today, his portraits hang in the same rooms where guests dine. The Rambagh's gardens alone cover 47 acres.

Jodhpur Umaid Bhawan Palace

Completed in 1943 after 15 years of construction, Umaid Bhawan is the largest private royal residence in the world — 347 rooms of Art Deco grandeur in honey-golden sandstone. The current Maharaja of Jodhpur lives in the private wing. Guests occupy one section; the royal family another. Breakfast at Umaid Bhawan is a remarkable thing to experience.

Udaipur Taj Lake Palace

Built in 1746 as a royal summer retreat by Maharana Jagat Singh II, the Lake Palace occupies a 4-acre island in the middle of Lake Pichola. It is reached only by boat. The white marble walls, 83 rooms and suites, and a lotus pool visible from the dining room have made it — by near-universal consensus — the most romantic hotel in India. And one of the most romantic in the world.

What You Will Experience

The Royal Highlights of This Journey

I Private Amber Fort Before the Crowds Arrive

A private guided visit to Amber Fort before public opening — the Sheesh Mahal in silence, golden morning light on 16th-century stone, your guide explaining the history of every carved archway with no other visitors present.

II Mehrangarh Fort — A Private Historian's Tour

Mehrangarh is one of the greatest medieval forts on earth. Your private expert historian — not a standard guide — takes you through sections closed to regular visitors, explaining the royal handprints in the gate, the battle-embedded cannonballs, and the untouched royal zenana quarters.

III Sunset Boat Ride on Lake Pichola

A private boat on Lake Pichola at sunset — watching the City Palace and Taj Lake Palace illuminate in the gold and pink light of the Rajasthan evening. The only way to understand why Udaipur is called the most beautiful city in India.

IV Private Courtyard Dinner Under the Rajasthan Stars

A candlelit dinner arranged in the private courtyard of your palace hotel — Rajasthani royal cuisine, folk musicians playing traditional instruments, the night sky above. An evening that no restaurant in the world can replicate.

V Gemstone Atelier — Jaipur's Master Jewellers

A private visit to one of Jaipur's master gemstone families — who have supplied royal courts for eight generations. Watch the cutting and polishing process, understand gem grading, and if you wish, commission a bespoke piece to bring home.

VI Hot Air Balloon Over the Pink City at Sunrise

Rising above Jaipur at first light — the Amber Fort hills, the pink city walls, the morning mist over the Aravalli Hills. Available October to April. One of the most beautiful ways to begin a day in Rajasthan.

Experiences Available Only to Our Guests

🎈 Hot Air Balloon at Sunrise over Jaipur

Rise above the Pink City as the sun appears over the Aravallis. The fort walls, the pink rooftops, the morning silence 300 metres below. Available October to April.

🍽️ Private Royal Thali Dinner in a Palace Courtyard

A candlelit Rajasthani royal feast — 20-dish silver thali, folk musicians, and the night sky above a 400-year-old courtyard. Arranged exclusively through Sanoli India Tours.

🧘 Sunrise Yoga in Rambagh Palace Gardens

A private yoga session on the Rambagh lawn as the palace grounds come alive in the morning light — the same lawns where the Maharaja played polo. Arranged through the hotel.

🏇 Polo Lesson at a Heritage Polo Ground

Rajasthan is where polo was played by maharajas for centuries. A private introductory lesson at a heritage polo ground near Jaipur — with a royal polo tradition going back to the 1890s.

Private Moonlit Boat on Lake Pichola

An evening on Lake Pichola after dark — the Taj Lake Palace illuminated in white and gold on the water, the City Palace glowing on the shore, champagne on the boat. Udaipur at its most magical.

💎 Private Gemstone Atelier Visit, Jaipur

A private introduction to one of Jaipur's master gem-cutting families — who have worked with emeralds and rubies for eight generations. Not available through any hotel directly.

The Royal Journey — How It Unfolds

Three Cities. An Unhurried Royal Pace.

Every phase is fully customisable. The durations below are recommendations — adjusted based on your preferences, energy, and available time.

PhaseI

Jaipur — Rambagh Palace

Recommended · 3 nights

+

Arrive at Jaipur International Airport. Your Sanoli driver meets you and transfers you to Rambagh Palace. Check-in to your suite. The rest of the day at leisure — explore the hotel's gardens, polo grounds, and the spa that occupies the former royal squash court.

Sightseeing: Private morning visit to Amber Fort before public opening. Hawa Mahal, City Palace and royal museum, Jantar Mantar. Private gemstone atelier visit. Optional hot air balloon at sunrise (October–April).

Hidden gem: Samode Palace — 45 minutes from Jaipur, a 500-year-old palace with hand-painted reception halls most tourists never find.

Private vehicle transfer to Jodhpur: approximately 5–6 hours through the Thar Desert landscape. Or fly (45 minutes) if time is precious.
PhaseII

Jodhpur — Umaid Bhawan Palace

Recommended · 2 to 3 nights

+

Arrive at Umaid Bhawan Palace — a building so large that arriving guests sometimes mistake the driveway for a road. The Art Deco interior, the underground swimming pool, and the private museum of the royal family's artefacts are extraordinary. The current Maharaja's wing is visible across the gardens.

Sightseeing: Private historian's tour of Mehrangarh Fort — including the royal handprints in the gate and sections not open to standard visitors. Jaswant Thada marble cenotaph. Sunrise walk through the blue lanes of the old city with a local guide.

Half-day option: Bishnoi village visit — where blackbucks and peacocks walk freely among the houses, protected by a 300-year-old environmental tradition.

Private vehicle transfer to Udaipur: 5–6 hours through central Rajasthan. Or fly (45 minutes) from Jodhpur Airport.
PhaseIII

Udaipur — Taj Lake Palace

Recommended · 3 nights

+

The boat ride from the Udaipur shore to the Taj Lake Palace — a 3-minute crossing across Lake Pichola — is one of the great arrival moments in travel. The island palace appears entirely surrounded by water, with the City Palace visible on one side and the Aravalli Hills on the other.

Sightseeing: City Palace and crystal gallery. Private sunset boat on Lake Pichola. Folk dance performance at Bagore ki Haveli on the lakefront. Private moonlit boat and dinner.

Half-day option: Ranakpur Jain Temples — 100 km into the Aravalli hills, 1,444 individually carved marble columns, no two identical. The most beautiful building most visitors to Udaipur never see.

Depart from Udaipur by air to Delhi, Mumbai, or any onward destination. Or continue by private vehicle to Jaisalmer for a desert extension.
+Ext

Optional Royal Extensions

Add to any point in the journey

+

Delhi + Taj Mahal (2–3 days): Begin in Delhi with a stay at Taj Mahal Hotel, New Delhi, then drive to the Taj Mahal in Agra before continuing to Jaipur. This creates a complete royal corridor from the Mughal to the Rajput.

Ranthambore Tiger Safari (2 nights): From Jaipur, 3 hours south by road. Stay at Taj Sawai Madhopur Lodge. Jeep safaris twice daily into Ranthambore National Park for Bengal tiger sightings.

Jaisalmer Desert Extension (2–3 nights): Continue from Jodhpur to the Golden City. Stay at Suryagarh — a luxury desert fortress hotel. Sunrise camel safari, private desert camp under the stars, Jaisalmer Fort living city exploration.

Polo lesson + private fort picnic: A private morning at a Jaipur heritage polo ground, followed by a picnic lunch inside the Amber Fort grounds — arranged with the fort heritage authority for exclusive guests.

Stories of the Royal Courts

What Our Guides Tell You That History Books Do Not

Why the Last Maharaja of Jaipur Refused to Leave Rambagh — and How He Was Finally Persuaded

When Rambagh Palace was converted into a hotel in 1957, Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II was reluctant to leave the home his family had occupied for 120 years. The agreement reached was unusual: the royal family would retain their private quarters indefinitely, the polo grounds would remain under their supervision, and the royal portraits would stay exactly where they had always hung. To this day, the portraits of the Jaipur royal family line the corridors of the hotel — not as decoration, but because they were never moved.

The Taj Lake Palace Was Built to Host Parties — and Why the Maharana Rarely Used It

Maharana Jagat Singh II built the Lake Palace in 1746 as a pleasure palace and royal retreat — a place for celebrations, away from the formality of the City Palace. The irony is that he used it very little. Within three years of its completion he died, and the palace passed to successors who preferred the mainland. For two centuries it was used as a summer retreat and barracks. When Taj Hotels converted it in 1963, the restoration team found original royal murals behind whitewash that no one knew existed. The most famous of these now hang in the hotel lobby.

How Umaid Bhawan Palace Employed 3,000 People for 15 Years — and Why It Was Built at All

Umaid Bhawan was not built for luxury. In 1929, a severe drought caused mass unemployment in Jodhpur. Maharaja Umaid Singh, unable to offer direct charity to the thousands of starving families who considered accepting charity a dishonour, commissioned the palace as a relief programme — paying craftsmen, quarry workers, and labourers a daily wage for 15 years of construction. By the time it was finished in 1943, the drought had long passed. But the building employed 3,000 people daily throughout. The palace was, in essence, an act of dignified compassion disguised as architectural ambition.

The Maharani of Jaipur Who Was Elected to Parliament With the Largest Majority in World History

Maharani Gayatri Devi of Jaipur — the last queen of the Jaipur royal family and wife of Maharaja Man Singh II — was described by Vogue as one of the most beautiful women in the world. In the 1962 Indian general election, she stood for Parliament and won with a majority of 192,909 votes — recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest electoral majority in history at the time. She later spent six months in Tihar Jail during the Emergency period (1975–77). Her autobiography, "A Princess Remembers", remains one of the most extraordinary accounts of royal Indian life ever written. Your guide at Rambagh can tell you which rooms in the palace she occupied.

Our Guests on The Royal Rajasthan Journey

"Arriving at the Taj Lake Palace by boat at night — the white marble illuminated on the black water — was the single most dramatic hotel arrival of my life. We have stayed at the Georges V in Paris, the Cipriani in Venice, and the Peninsula in Hong Kong. The Lake Palace is in a category entirely of its own."

"The private courtyard dinner at Rambagh — Rajasthani musicians, silver thali, the garden at night — was one of the most memorable evenings of our lives. The tour guide at Mehrangarh Fort was extraordinary. He had a PhD in Rajput history. The difference between him and a standard guide is the difference between an expert and a brochure."

"My husband surprised me with this trip for our 25th anniversary. We had been to India before but never like this. Sanoli arranged everything — the flower-decorated suite at Umaid Bhawan, the champagne on the Lake Pichola boat, the private fort tour. India is extraordinary when you do it this way."

Questions About The Royal Journey

The tour includes stays at three legendary Taj palace properties: Rambagh Palace in Jaipur (the former royal residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur), Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur (where the current royal family still lives in a private wing), and Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur (a white marble palace that appears to float on Lake Pichola). All three were actual royal residences before being converted to hotels.
Depending on your itinerary: private Amber Fort visit before public opening, private historian's tour of Mehrangarh Fort, royal Rajasthani thali dinner in a palace courtyard with folk musicians, sunset boat on Lake Pichola, optional hot air balloon at sunrise over Jaipur, optional polo lesson at a heritage polo ground, and private gemstone atelier visit with one of Jaipur's master jewellers.
Yes — this is one of the most popular honeymoon and anniversary packages we arrange. The combination of Rambagh Palace, Umaid Bhawan Palace, and Taj Lake Palace creates an extraordinary romantic journey. We arrange special personal touches — flower-decorated rooms, private candlelit dinners, champagne on arrival — based on your preferences and the occasion.
We recommend 8 to 12 nights — typically 3 nights in Jaipur (Rambagh), 2–3 nights in Jodhpur (Umaid Bhawan), and 3 nights in Udaipur (Lake Palace). Since every Sanoli tour is fully private and customisable, the duration is adjusted to your preferences. Delhi and Agra can be added at the beginning, and Ranthambore tiger safari or Jaisalmer desert extension at any point.
Absolutely. While the Taj palace hotels are the centrepiece, we can incorporate other legendary properties — Samode Palace near Jaipur, RAAS Jodhpur, Oberoi Udaivilas, or Suryagarh in Jaisalmer. We can also combine Taj properties with Oberoi or Leela group hotels based on your preference. Tell us your interests and budget and we will design the perfect luxury itinerary.
Sanoli India Tours handles everything beyond the hotel stay — the private luxury vehicle and driver for the entire journey, expert local guides in each city, all monument visits and exclusive experiences, restaurant reservations, and 24/7 personal support. Booking through Sanoli gives you a single point of contact for the entire journey rather than managing hotels, drivers, and guides separately across three cities.
WhatsApp us at +91 9717278522 or email sanoliindiatour@gmail.com with your travel dates, number of guests, and any special occasions or preferences. We respond within 2-4 hours with a personalised luxury proposal including hotel availability, pricing, and an exclusive itinerary — at no cost and with no obligation to proceed.
